Overview of Tests and Test Reports
The tests and other products provided by JRA, Inc. are used to create a set of proprietary selection reports specifically designed for use in pre-employment evaluations of applicants for police, corrections, and other public safety positions. JRA's test products are only available for sale to public safety agencies or licensed psychologists conducting assessments for public safety agencies.

The public safety positions covered by the special selection reports, with job-specific norms, are:
  • Police officer/sheriff's deputy/state trooper
  • Corrections officer
  • Firefighter/EMT
  • Juvenile probation counselor
  • Communications dispatcher
  • Security Officers/Security Guards

The JRA Selection Reports Used By Employers and Their Background Investigators (Pre-Job Offer)
Our proprietary   Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ)   is used primarily as a tool for conducting background investigations more efficiently and cost-effectively. Psychologists that conduct pre-conditional offer of employment evaluations also find the information provided on the PHQ valuable in forming their recommendations. The PHQ contains detailed questions about various aspects of a job applicant's life, including education, employment, law enforcement experience, driving record, criminal record and substance use.

The Personal History Questionnaire-Required Explanations (PHQ-RE) is an online only version of the PHQ that offers provides yet more information by requiring that the candidate describe the who, what, why, when, and where for questions deemed selection relevant by expert psychologists in the area of public safety psychology.

The PHQ and PHQ-RE are designed to be administered in the early stages of the application process, before a conditional offer of employment has been made.

The JRA Selection Reports Designed to be Used by Psychologists Assessing Public Safety Candidates
These reports are created from the results of four different tests and two versions of a psychological history questionnaire, which (with the exception of the CPI instruments and the STAXI) must be administered after a conditional offer of employment has been made.

They are:
  • The California Psychological Inventory-434 (CPI-434) and CPI-260 measures normal-range human traits and personality characteristics such as Tolerance, Responsibility, Integrity, Empathy, and Self-Control
  • The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) identifies various types of psychopathology, such as Anxiety, Paranoia, Aggression, and Depression
  • The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-II (STAXI-II) which measures the expression of anger and anger-related behaviors
  • The Psychological History Questionnaire (PsyQ) and PsyQ-Required Explanations (PsyQ-RE) ask many of the same questions as the PHQ, plus "medical" questions that are not allowed to be asked until after a conditional offer of employment has been made. These additional questions ask about details of alcohol and drug use, early life history, psychological problems, and related psychological treatment.
