A Review of Recent Developments in the Field of Public Safety Psychology Related to Virtual Assessment, Impression Management, and the Detection of Bias
This continuing education (CE) offering is suitable for experienced public safety psychologists. The first presentation reviews recent empirical analyses investigating the validity of remote interviews and test administration and discusses ethical implications. The second presentation discusses the utility of the polygraph for combating pervasive impression management among public safety applicants. Data showing the effect on admissions rates of negative behavior will be displayed. The final presentation introduces a new California amendment to the foundational law governing law enforcement screening that requires the screening out of bias among applicants. Nuance of the law are discussed as well as a pilot study investigating correlates of admitting racial slurs under polygraph conditions.
