A Review of Recent Developments in the Field of Public Safety Psychology Related to Law Enforcement Interactions with the Mentally Ill, Virtual Assessment, and Screening for Bias
This continuing education (CE) offering is suitable for experienced public safety psychologists. The first presentation reviews recent developments in public safety organizations' response to call involving mentally ill individuals. Alternative models such as CAHOOTS (Portland) will be discussed and viewed from a psychologist's perspective. The second presentation consists of empirical analyses investigating the validity of remote interviews and test administration and discusses ethical implications. The third presentation discusses a new California amendment to the foundational law governing law enforcement screening that requires the screening out of bias among applicants. Nuance of the law are discussed as well as a pilot study investigating correlates of admitting racial slurs under polygraph conditions. Finally, case studies will be presented that highlight potential issues in the assessment of bias among candidates.
